  Purpose

The purpose of this study is to determine whether community-based peer education and condom distribution combined with improved treatment of sexually transmitted infections are effective in reducing the spread of HIV infection in a sub-Saharan African population

Primary Outcome Measures:
  • HIV incidence at the community level

Secondary Outcome Measures:
  • Self-reported genital ulcers
  • Self-reported urethral or genital discharge
  • Sexually transmitted infection treatment effectiveness (self-reported cessation of symptoms)
  • Sexual behaviour change (sexual debut, sexual partner change, non-regular partners, unprotected sex with regular and casual partners)
  • Health-seeking behaviour change
  • HIV/AIDS knowledge
