No. 148-02 August 15, 2002
Plans Set for DoD Sept. 11 Observance

The Department of Defense is finalizing plans for its observance of the Sept. 11th terrorist attack on the Pentagon. The approximately one-hour ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sept. 11, 2002, beginning at 9:00 a.m. EDT at the Phoenix Project site, which is the area damaged in the attack. The ceremony features addresses by President George W. Bush, Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Richard B. Myers. The large U.S. flag flown on the side of the Pentagon after the Sept. 11th attack will be unfurled in the same location during the ceremony, and a moment of silence will be observed at 9:37 a.m., the time at which American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon on Sept. 11th.

The ceremony is not open to the general public. For media arrangements, please contact the following individuals (e-mail preferred): for media interviews, contact Glenn Flood at glenn.flood@osd.mil or (703) 695-6294; for media site setup arrangements or other technical details, contact Terry Mitchell at terry.mitchell@osd.mil or (703) 695-0169.
