NREL's Photovoltaic research supports the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Energy Technologies Program.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Photovoltaic (PV) research is focused on decreasing the nation's reliance on fossil-fuel generated electricity by lowering the cost of delivered electricity and improving the efficiency of PV modules and systems. NREL's PV research contributes to these goals through fundamental research, advanced materials and devices, and technology development.

NREL's capabilities include:

Our PV R&D emphasizes innovative research, thin-film development, manufacturing R&D, and systems development and reliability. We conduct this research in collaboration with universities and solar industry through research partnerships and direct support of the NREL Solar Program and the Solar America Initiative.

NREL PV R&D is performed under the National Center for Photovoltaics.
