U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP)

The United States Institute of Peace is an independent, nonpartisan institution established and funded by Congress. Its goals are to help prevent and resolve violent international conflicts, promote post-conflict stability and development, and increase conflict management capacity, tools, and intellectual capital worldwide. The Institute does this by empowering others with knowledge, skills, and resources, as well as by directly engaging in peacebuilding efforts around the globe. On May 6, Commission members, as well as USIP's Richard Solomon and Paul Hughes, met at the White House to present the Commission's final report on the nation's long-term strategy regarding deterrence capabilities, arms control initiatives, and nuclear nonproliferation. USIP facilitated the Commission's review of these issues and the execution of its final report, which in part finds that "the threat of nuclear Armageddon has largely receded" but the proliferation of nuclear weapons is dangerously close to a "tipping point." Karzai Zardari.President Obama to Meet with Afghan, Pakistan Leaders

President Obama will meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari to discuss ways to improve cooperation in the fight against al-Qaeda and the Taliban. To kick off the Institute's new Congressional Newsmakers Series, Senator Kit Bond of Missouri offered his own views on the Obama administration's strategy for Pakistan and Afghanistan, and how the U.S. should approach this troubled region. The United States Institute of Peace mourns the loss of Jack Kemp, former member of Congress, who died Saturday evening due to cancer. Congressman Kemp served on the Genocide Prevention Task Force, which was jointly convened by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the American Academy of Diplomacy and the United States Institute of Peace.
