Formally, there are two operational joint ventures between U.S. companies and local firms in the Republic of Tatarstan: Cummins Kama and Tatex. They concentrate on the automotive and petrochemical sectors respectively.
In reality, the U.S. business penetration in the local economy is higher. It aims at petrochemical sector, electrical engineering, telecommunications, IT and finance, where U.S./multinational companies either work thru local distributors and dealers, or actively trade with local end-users. The major items of U.S. exports include industrial machinery, components and modern technologies.
There is also a local business entity – TAIF (Tatar-American Investment Fund), set as a U.S. – Russian joint venture in mid-1990s, but later positioned as a local organization, completely integrated in the economy of Tatarstan in a legal form of an open joint stock company: TAIF, OAO, incorporated under the Russian laws. At present, TAIF is a holding company with over 30 subsidiaries in various sectors of the local economy, including but not limited to petrochemical industry, construction, telecommunication, finance, and mass media. TAIF is one of five principal tax-payers in Tatarstan, and some of its major stakeholders maintain good personal relations with the family of Tatarstan’s President, which is an important venue for doing business in the region.
Below are provided the contact details of the U.S.-Russian joint ventures in Tatarstan, of local offices of the U.S./multinational companies, which actively work in the region, and of some major local companies, which have acquired and/or plan to buy products and services from U.S. companies.
