The 2009 Summit of the Americas was held in Trinidad and Tobago, April 17-19, under the theme of "Securing our Citizens Future by Promoting Human Prosperity, Energy Security and Environmental Sustainability." The 2009 Summit was an opportunity for the United States to demonstrate that America remains a reliable partner in the hemisphere, committed to working with our neighbors in a spirit of partnership to uphold our shared values and pursue policies that bring direct benefits to all peoples of the Americas. The United States is at a critical moment in our relationship with the region, and we will remain engaged with a positive agenda. We face more challenges ahead, but the Summit provides a framework within which to address these challenges.

Prior Summits of the Americas were held in Miami, Florida (1994); Santiago, Chile (1998); Quebec, Canada (2001); Monterrey, Mexico (2004); and Mar del Plata, Argentina (2005).
