Radiocast: Understanding Your Health - Healthfinder.gov

Debra: This is Healthcare 411: Information for better health. October is Health Literacy Month: a good time to remind Americans that many of us could stand to improve our health literacy skills. AHRQ Director Dr. Carolyn Clancy explains:

Dr. Clancy: Health literacy isn’t just about being able to read. It’s about how well a person can find and understand information about health care. This understanding plays a big role in how well a person can take information and use it to make good decisions about their care, such as following directions for treatment.

Debra: So where can consumers find reliable, yet easy-to-understand health information?

Dr. Clancy: Healthfinder.gov, a federal Web site designed to help people stay healthy, provides evidence-based health information in both English and Spanish. And this site has recently been improved to make it even easier for consumers to find and use helpful information to better understand their own health.

Debra: Healthcare 411 is produced by AHRQ, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. I’m Debra James for Healthcare 411.
