DID YOU KNOW?

In 1994, Federal reserved water rights were decreed for all unappropriated water in the portion of Rocky Mountain National Park located east of the Continental Divide. Absolute water rights for the Colorado River drainage were given to the Park in 2000. These decrees gave the park water rights dating back to 1915. Any company or individual that held water rights prior to 1915 retained a higher priority.

Located some 2,600 miles southwest of Hawai`i, this is one of the most remote national parks in the United States. It is also one of the newest; it was authorized by the U.S. Congress in 1988 and officially established in 1993 when a 50 year lease was signed.The park in American Samoa adds a unique scenic and ecological dimension to the U. S. National Park System.

Some of the tallest waterfalls in the world are found in Yosemite Valley (Yosemite National Park), including Yosemite Falls (with a total drop of 2,425 feet) and Ribbon Fall (1,612 feet). The Tuolumne and Merced River systems originate along the crest of the Sierra Nevada in the park and have carved river canyons 3,000 to 4,000 feet deep. The Tuolumne River drains the entire northern portion of the park, an area of approximately 680 square miles. The Merced River begins in the park’s southern peaks, primarily the Cathedral and Clark Ranges, and drains an area of approximately 511 square miles. Hydrologic processes, including glaciation, flooding, and fluvial geomorphic response, have been fundamental in creating landforms in the park.
