Federal Transit Administration Receives Chairman’s Award for Federal Achievement In Historic Preservation for Exemplary Solutions to Complex World Trade Center Issues

WASHINGTON, D.C.– The Federal Transit Administration (FTA), U.S. Department of Transportation, (DOT), today was honored with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) Chairman’s Award for Federal Achievement in Historic Preservation for its exemplary accomplishments regarding treatment of the historic remnants of the World Trade Center.

Federal agencies are required to complete a Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act review when their undertakings may adversely impact historic resources. In the case of the World Trade Center, scene of the worst terrorist attack in the nation’s history, the FTA worked closely with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, and other consulting parties to devise strategies to help Lower Manhattan’s transportation facilities recover while displaying historic respect for the vestiges of the attack and the heroism of the survivors. This was an extremely complex Section 106 proceeding, and the outcome was exemplary.

ACHP Vice Chairman Susan S. Barnes presented the award to officials of the FTA/DOT. Partnership commendations went to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
