Matthew K. Asada is the Consul for Political and Economic Affairs at the American Consulate General Kolkata, India.
Mr. Asada joined the Foreign Service in September 2003. His first assignment was at the American Consulate Lahore, Pakistan (2004-2005) where he served as the first Management Officer in seven years and oversaw a significant growth in personnel. In Munich, Germany he re-launched post’s Non-Immigrant Visa Unit after more than a decade’s absence (2005-2007). As the U.S. Department of State Representative assigned to the German-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in Kunduz, Afghanistan (2007-2008) he reported on political and economic developments in Northeast Afghanistan and engaged in extensive public outreach. He was instrumental in expanding the opening hours and maximizing the trade opportunities of the new U.S.-funded $49 million Afghan-Tajik bridge.

Mr. Asada earned bachelor’s degrees in Economics, International Studies and German from the University of Pennsylvania in 2002; and his master’s of science in European Politics and Policy from the London School of Economics in 2003. He speaks fluent German and studied as an exchange student at the Humboldt University in Berlin. He also speaks beginner Hindi, Urdu, Dari and Spanish.
