IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 066-00
February 15, 2000

DOD ANNOUNCES 25TH ROUND OF OVERSEAS BASE CLOSURES

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen announced today that the Department of Defense will end operations at two overseas locations as the 25th round of base closures.

Headquarters U.S. Army Europe will cease operations in Bad Kreuznach, Germany, and return six facilities to host nation control. They are the Bad Kreuznach Family Housing Area, the Army Air Field, the Hospital Kaserne, the George C. Marshall Kaserne, the Moersfeld Storage Point and Rose Barracks.

Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe will cease operations at the Soesterberg Collocated Operating Base in the Netherlands.

The changes in USAREUR's and USAFE's operations are designed to provide better command and control for the units, provide long-range cost savings, maximize available quality of life facilities and services, and more. Planning for these actions continues and includes site surveys, review of civilian positions, development of timelines, etc.

Coordination with host nation officials at all levels was conducted prior to this announcement.
