IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 1285-07
November 06, 2007

DoD Receives Chairman's Award From Advisory Council on Historic Preservation

The Defense Department is being awarded the Chairman’s Award by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, for their innovative program to teach deploying military personnel about cultural preservation.

The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is an independent federal agency that promotes the preservation, enhancement, and productive use of our nation’s historic resources, and advises the President and Congress on national historic preservation policy. Their Chairman’s Award is an annual award that honors outstanding federal achievement in cultural issues.

The DoD program, entitled “In Theater Heritage Training for Deploying Personnel” educates troops about the importance of heritage assets, and methods of protecting them. The program features practical teaching tools, including playing cards that highlight archeological sites, mock cultural sites for training scenarios, and scripted cultural preservation training modules. The program was created by an Army team led by Laurie Rush, of Fort Drum, N.Y.

The award will be presented in a ceremony on Nov. 7th, at 9 a.m. EST at the Advisory Council’s headquarters in the Old Post Office Building, 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue N.W., Washington, D.C.
