Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld announced today that the president has nominated Army Maj. Gen. Thomas F. Metz, for appointment to the rank of lieutenant general and assignment as commanding general, III Corps and Fort Hood, Fort Hood, Texas. He is currently serving as the commanding general, 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) and Fort Riley, Fort Riley, Kan.

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Eric K. Shinseki announced today that Army Brig. Gen. Douglas E. Lute is being assigned as deputy director for Operations, (J-3), U.S. European Command, Germany. Lute is currently assigned as the assistant division commander (Support), 1st Infantry Division, U.S. Army Europe and Seventh Army, Germany.
