The Navy and Marine Corps were honored with three of five Presidential awards for leadership in federal energy management during a ceremony today at the White House Old Executive Office Building.
“Our leaders in the Department of the Navy realize that the race to achieve energy security in America is a marathon,” said Dionel Aviles, undersecretary of the Navy. “Each is focused on three goals: Exceed the requirements of the 2005 Energy Policy Act of 2005; reduce energy consumption, and ensure that our nation becomes more secure,” he said.
Naval Base Coronado, Calif; Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz.; and Naval Undersea Warfare Command Keyport, Wash., were honored for their exemplary energy programs which combined to save $3 million in energy costs in 2005. The three installations earned this distinction through comprehensive strategies of innovative energy and water savings activities ranging from sustainable building design principles, to investing in renewable energy resources.
The three installations were able to achieve such overwhelming success in reducing energy consumption in many ways. Examples include: the installation solar powered light emitting diode lighting; building tune-ups; lighting improvements; leak identification and quick repair program; and leveraging utilities energy service contracts by incorporating efficiencies and sustainability in design of new military construction and repair work.
The Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) Presidential Awards were established under Executive Order 13123, requiring federal agencies to improve energy efficiency and management. Under this mandate, the Presidential awards are presented to agency energy management teams for large-scale, comprehensive organizational efforts showing excellence in the use of the energy efficiency and management tools. Criteria are specific and strict: implementation, institutionalization, outreach and results.
The unprecedented achievement of winning 60 percent of the prestigious Presidential awards acknowledges the Navy’s continued quest for excellence in energy management.
In addition to these prestigious Presidential awards, the Department of Energy FEMP presented the Department of the Navy (DoN) with five of 17 Federal Energy and Water Management Awards, on Oct. 5. All government agencies compete for these annual awards and for the DoN to receive 31 percent of them is in itself significant.
