IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 618-95
November 21, 1995

GENERAL SHALIKASHVILI TO RECEIVE

DISTINGUISHED PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD

General John M. Shalikashvili, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will receive the Angier Biddle Duke Distinguished Public Service Award at the International Rescue Committee Freedom Award Dinner at 7:30 p.m. on November 21, 1995, at the Plaza Hotel, 768 Fifth Avenue, New York, N.Y. Mrs. Angier Biddle Duke will present the award.

The International Rescue Committee Angier Biddle Duke Public Service Award is given in recognition of the highest standards of citizenship. It honors an individual who demonstrates continuing compassionate concern for the welfare of others and, in particular, refugees. The award is being given to General Shalikashvili in recognition of his life as a refugee and his military career, as well as recognizing the increasingly important role of the Armed Forces in responding to humanitarian emergencies.

General Shalikashvili was appointed the thirteenth chairman of the Joint chiefs of Staff on October 25, 1993, and reappointed to a second term on October 1, 1995. In 1991, he commanded Operation PROVIDE COMFORT, the relief operation that successfully returned hundreds of thousands of Kurdish refugees to Northern Iraq.

For more information concerning the award presentation contact Donna Thompson, International Rescue Committee, at (212) 551-3029, or Carolyn Piper in the Chairman's Public Affairs office at (703) 697-4272.
