STATEMENT BY GENERAL HENRY H. SHELTON, US ARMY, CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF

It has been an honor to serve as the principal military advisor to the President and Secretary of Defense for the past 20 months. I appreciate their confidence in my ability to continue that service to our country for another term as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

It has been a particular privilege to represent our nation's soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines during a period of great international uncertainty and an unprecedented pace of military operations.

Our men and women in uniform and their families give much of themselves and ask for very little in return as they safeguard America's security in a troubled world. I am both proud and humbled to act as their voice in Washington.

I thank President Clinton, Secretary Cohen and the U.S. Congress for their continued support of our troops and I look forward to serving another two years following confirmation.
