COMMUNITY DRUG AWARENESS AWARDS
The Department of Defense announced today the winners of the fifth annual
Secretary of Defense "Military Services Community Drug Awareness Award."
The Award recognizes the best of community outreach drug demand reduction
programs from each of the military services and the National Guard. This
year's winners include: Army - Headquarters, 101st Airborne Division (Air
Assault) and Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Marine Corps - Marine Corps Logistics
Base, Camp Pendleton, California; Navy - Naval Alcohol Rehabilitation Center
at Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida; Air Force - Robins AFB, Georgia;
National Guard Bureau - Arizona National Guard.
Counterdrug demand reduction programs are designed to provide drug abuse
education and assistance to military members, their dependents, and nearby
civilian communities. An Awards ceremony, hosted by Deputy Secretary of
Defense John White, was held today at the Pentagon. Assisting with the
presentations were Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and
Low Intensity Conflict Allen Holmes and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense
for Drug Enforcement Policy and Support Brian Sheridan. Representatives from
each of the winning installations were present to receive the Awards.

"Youth Drug Demand Reduction Program"
Activity Description: The Fort Campbell "Youth Drug Demand Reduction
Program"
is a multi-disciplinary and comprehensive prevention and education approach to
community drug demand reduction. Through the establishment of stronger
partnership coalitions with surrounding communities, the men and women of Fort
Campbell are placing great emphasis on the target population thus reducing the
demand for drugs in the community.

"Community Substance Abuse Outreach Program"
Activity Description: Camp Pendleton's Community Substance Abuse Outreach
Program is a multi-faceted program that brings together assets form marine and
community service organizations to combat substance abuse in Camp Pendleton's
neighboring communities. Through activities such as D.A.R.E., Neighborhood
Watch Programs, Safety Fairs and track meets/bike rodeos, Camp Pendleton's
anti-drug message maintained continual visibility throughout the base and local
community. The capstone of this year's Outreach Program was the annual Red
Ribbon Campaign which was concluded with a "Drug Free Carnival" that drew over
1500 attendees.

"Children's Anti-Drug Use Campaign"
Activity Description: The NAS Jacksonville community outreach programs are
specifically designed to focus on raising the level of anti-drug awareness
among children, families and the community at large. Through focused efforts
including an "anti-Drug Use Book Cover Contest" and participation in the
Treatment Taskforce of the Coalition for a Drug and Crime Free Jacksonville,
staff members introduce brief scientific facts, health consequences, legal
consequences, and lost career opportunities that can result from drug
involvement.

"Band of the Air Force Reserve Drug Free Program"
Activity Description: The Air Force Reserve Band of Robins AFB, GA, is a
world-renowned musical group that features popular music, energetic performers,
celebrity videotape segments, and high-tech lighting effects to create an
effective demand reduction program for elementary and middle school students.
Through the presentation of a strong anti-drug message within the context of a
fun-filled show, this program has been highly effective in motivating young
people to stay drug free.

Joint Counter Narcotics Task Force
"Supporting People in Neighborhoods (SPIN)
Activity description: Supporting People in Neighborhoods, SPIN, is a
comprehensive program using both Army and Air National Guardsmen assigned to
the Joint Counter Narcotics Task Force. The SPIN program acts as a force
multiplier, coordinating with Law Enforcement and Community-based
organizations, integrating drug supply and demand reduction efforts into a very
effective anti-drug message.
