IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 489-95
September 07, 1995

Exercise AUTUMN ALLIES 95 Trains U.S. Marines and Ukrainian Naval Infantry

Approximately 400 U.S. Marines and 200 Ukrainian soldiers will participate in Exercise AUTUMN ALLIES 95 to promote interoperability in peacekeeping operations from September 11 - 25 at Camp LeJeune, N.C.

The 1st Battalion 6th Marines and a Ukrainian Naval Infantry Company will participate in the training, which is being conducted in the spirit of the Partnership for Peace program. Units will train to improve peacekeeping operations in a cooperative United States-Ukrainian effort. They will conduct realistic small-unit and individual training, while developing a better understanding about the challenges involved in performing multinational operations.

AUTUMN ALLIES 95 is designed to foster cooperation between the United States and the Ukraine. The Marines and Ukrainian Naval Infantry training will include convoy operations, urban patrolling, checkpoint operations and vehicle searches. Marines and Ukrainian Naval Infantry will operate side-by-side during all training. U.S. and Ukrainian translators will be used to facilitate the training.

Partnership For Peace is a NATO Program initiated in January 1994 by the U.S. Warsaw Initiative. It is designed to improve security and stability in the European and Atlantic area through enhanced cooperation and common action with partner countries from Central and Eastern Europe. The U.S. Atlantic Command's goal is to help improve the interoperability of partner nations with United States' and NATO forces.
