STATEMENT BY GENERAL JOHN M. SHALIKASHVILI, CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF

Our Nation today has lost a dedicated and remarkable sailor, Admiral Mike Boorda. The Navy has lost a great Captain. I and so many others who have served beside him have lost a great friend.

Mike Boorda's career encompassed 40 years, rising from seaman to achieve the highest rank in his service. He loved the Navy and his accomplishments were many. He was a wise leader, a man of great integrity and character, and a true patriot. But throughout his career, he was known for his deep concern for sailors -- the men and women our Nation have placed in his charge.

My deepest sympathies and concerns go out to Bettie, the children, the grandchildren, and to all of those enriched by his life and service.
