GENERAL OFFICER ANNOUNCEMENT

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen announced today that the president has nominated Army Maj. Gen. John A. Van Alstyne for appointment to the grade of lieutenant general and assignment as deputy commanding general for initial entry training, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, Fort Monroe, Va. Van Alstyne is currently serving as commanding general, U.S. Army Training Center and Fort Jackson, Fort Jackson, S.C.
