IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 028-97
January 22, 1997

NAVY ANNOUNCES QUALITY OF LIFE AWARD HONORING SECRETARY OF DEFENSE PERRY

The Secretary of the Navy John H. Dalton announced yesterday that the Department of the Navy has established the Dr. William J. Perry quality of life award.

The annual award recognizes outstanding contributions of Navy and Marine Corps commands to the quality of life of Sailors, Marines and their families. The award, a medallion encased in acrylic, will be permanently displayed in the Pentagon with the engraved name of each annual recipient. Commands achieving this honor will receive a smaller replica of the Perry quality of life award.

Secretary Dalton presented an artist's rendition of the award to Secretary Perry yesterday at a breakfast honoring him. Never before has the Secretary of Defense placed so much emphasis on the quality of life of the country's Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines, said Dalton. The Navy and Marine Corps have emphasized quality of life under your leadership and have made it our number one priority.

Quality of life is all about people, Perry said. Once you've recruited and trained the best people, you've got to retain them. That's what quality of life is all about keeping our Navy the best damn Navy' in the world.
