Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld announced today that the President has nominated Air Force Maj. Gen. Steven R. Polk for appointment to the grade of lieutenant general with assignment as vice commander, Pacific Air Forces, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. Polk is currently serving as commander, Nineteenth Air Force, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Vern Clark announced the following assignments:
Navy Rear Adm. (lower half) Paul J. Ryan is being assigned as commander, Mine Warfare Command. Ryan is currently serving as director, Warfare Programs and Readiness, N8, U.S. Atlantic Fleet.
Navy Rear Adm. (lower half) (select) James G. Stavrides is being assigned as director, Naval Operations Group, N3/N5, OPNAV, Washington, D.C. Stavrides is currently serving as deputy director for Requirements Assessment, N81/director, Commander in Chief Liaison Division, N83, OPNAV, Washington, D.C.
