STENBIT SWORN IN AS ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE (C3I)

John P. Stenbit was sworn in today as assistant secretary of Defense (Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence). The White House announced Stenbit's nomination onJune 7; the Senate confirmed him on Friday, Aug. 3. David O. Cooke, the Department's director of Administration and Management, conducted the swearing-in ceremony.

Stenbit has served in key positions with electronic, aerospace, and information system responsibilities. He has held a number of positions with TRW, retiring in May 2001. In earlier assignments with the firm, he was executive vice president and general manager of TRW Systems Integration Group, performing systems engineering and integration of complex systems such as strategic and tactical command and control, information processing and security systems. He has also worked for the Aerospace Corp., focusing on command and control systems for missiles and satellites.

Stenbit is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, served as chairman of the Science and Technology Advisory Panel to the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and was a member of the Science Advisory Group to the directors of the Naval Intelligence and Defense Communications Agency. He also chaired the Research, Engineering and Development Advisory Committee for the administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration.

The new assistant secretary received a bachelor's and master's degree in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology.
