    Warning Coordination Meteorologist & Service Coordination Hydrologist Course

    Course Number: WCMSCH

    Course Length: 8 Working days. Additional information will be provided to participants in an electronic Welcome Packet about 1 month prior to the course.

    Type of Course: Residence

    Intended Audience: Warning Coordination Meteorologists, Service Coordination Hydrologists

    Prerequisites: None

    Course Goal: To provide the basic knowledge and skills necessary to be an effective Warning Coordination Meteorologist (WCM) at a WFO or Service Coordination Hydrologist (SCH) at a RFC.

    Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Deal effectively with the media.
  • Conduct effective, focused and informative outreach and support presentations
  • Coordinate effectively with local, state and national agencies
  • Perform storm/flood damage assessment and post disaster survey functions
  • Monitor the effectiveness of the warning program
  • Assist in the establishment of spotter networks
  • Employ management practices for customer relations and development
  • Manage time more efficiently.
  • Employ effective communication practices
  • Resolve conflict problems within the office
  • Course Content: This course covers topics on communication techniques and media responses, interaction with local, state and national agencies, storm and flood assessments; post disaster surveys, spotter networks establishment and maintenance, operational warning philosophy, customer relations and development, effective outreach presentations, conflict resolution and basic principles of time management.

    ACE Accreditation: The American Council on Education has not reviewed this course for recommendation of college credit.
