$2.5 Million Federal Grant For Texas State Health Services Group

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded more than $2.5 million to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) for care and health services provided to evacuees following Hurricane Ike.
The grant of $2,565,347 is payment for services provided by the San Antonio State Hospital staff to shelter special-need evacuees needing medical oversight after the disaster.
FEMA, as part of its ongoing mission to the state of Texas, forwarded 100 percent of the project costs to Texas. The obligated funds are a portion of $394 million in total Public Assistance disaster funds forwarded to the state since September 2008.
Federal Coordinating Officer Brad Harris said the close cooperation between the two medical organizations providing the services demonstrated that excellent care is possible even in extremely difficult times.
Once the obligated funds were sent to the state, further fund management including disbursement to organizations actually performing the service, became the responsibility of the state.
FEMA leads and supports the nation in a risk-based, comprehensive emergency management system of preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation, to reduce the loss of life and property and protect the nation from all hazards including natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other man-made disasters.
