AUSTIN, Texas -- Helping Texans rebuild stronger and safer is the goal of mitigation advisers stationed in Disaster Recovery Centers and home improvement stores throughout the area of the state most impacted by Hurricane Ike. These employees of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provide a wealth of information on measures people can take to reduce the likelihood of losses and damage in future extreme wind and rain events.

At the top of the list of ideas is elevating, whether that means raising a whole structure or only some essential items, such as electrical, heating and cooling components. Mitigation advisers can also provide guidance, as well as publications, about flood insurance, protective shutters, hurricane straps, house wrap, ways to strengthen roofs and many other topics.

"By the numbers" information for mitigation advisers includes the following:

Mitigation advisers may be consulted at Disaster Recovery Centers anytime the centers are open, as listed at www.txdps.state.tx.us/dem/pages/dr1791_drc_list.htm. Advisers move around among various home improvement centers on a changing schedule that is publicized each week. No appointments are needed.

FEMA publications and other resources, including CDs and brochures, are available from the advisers and from the FEMA library. Order forms are available on the FEMA Web site at www.fema.gov/plan/prevent/bestpractices/index.shtm

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
