AUSTIN, Texas -- Wharton County is now eligible for disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA's) Public Assistance Program, under the Sept. 13 Hurricane Ike federal disaster declaration. This county joins the other 49 counties previously designated for Public Assistance.

Local governments and certain nonprofits in Wharton County may apply through the Governor's Division of Emergency Management for the reimbursement of eligible and documented costs for emergency protective measures taken before and after Hurricane Ike, as well as the cost of debris removal.

County applicants may also be eligible for the reimbursement of eligible permanent work, costs for the repair or replacement of damaged public facilities, such as eligible schools, libraries, other public buildings, roads, bridges, public water control facilities, utilities, and certain recreational facilities.

Public Assistance is funded by FEMA at a minimum cost share of 75 percent and a non-federal share of 25 percent. Also, the federal cost share of 75 percent applies to work to mitigate against future events, either in conjunction with disaster repairs or as stand-alone projects under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

Application procedures for local governments in Wharton County will be explained at an applicant briefing conducted by the state. Applicants will be notified as to when and where these meetings will take place. Local governments submit their worksheets for eligible costs to the state through formal requests for Public Assistance.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
