AUSTIN, Texas -- The state of Texas and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) report that more than 700 families displaced by Hurricane Ike are now in manufactured homes.

This decision to put families into temporary manufactured housing, while their homes are being repaired, is requested by the state when other housing options are not available. To make the program run smoothly, a concerted effort between federal, state and local communities is necessary.

And this has happened, with many cities and counties approving waivers to allow manufactured units to be placed in the 100-year floodplain. Entergy and other energy companies also streamlined their process by adding staff that ranged from more work crews to more office staff to handle the paperwork.

FEMA's commitment to speed up the process of delivering and installing units is showing great progress; and as a result, the number of applicants moving into manufactured housing is climbing as well. More than 688 mobile homes are in the installation process. Added to the 701 units installed, that's a total of more than 1,300 manufactured homes.

The following is a chart that indicates how many manufactured homes are established with signed occupancy agreements.

Manufactured housing sites Orange County Jefferson County Chambers County Galveston County Other affected counties Totals
  Private property   540   43   39   29   2   653
  Commercial   13   5   7   7   16   48
