AUSTIN, Texas -- Due to an active hurricane season, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is giving local governments in Texas more time to request federal reimbursements for repairing public facilities and cleaning up storm debris.

The following extensions have been approved:

A letter from FEMA to the Governor's Division of Emergency Management said the extensions were granted due to the response necessary for the severe weather and acknowledges "the burden this has placed on local jurisdictions and state agencies."

Reimbursement to local governments, Indian tribes and certain private nonprofits is paid through FEMA's Public Assistance program. Funding is paid to the state on behalf of "subgrantees" (local governments and certain private nonprofits) for eligible and documented repair projects stemming from the disaster. FEMA does not pay for repairs that were needed prior to the disaster event.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or
man-made, including acts of terror.
