The expectations surrounding emergency management within the United States have significantly changed over the last several years. Although all disasters are considered local disasters, the role of the state and federal government in providing life saving and life sustaining support has increased. Here in the New England region and across the country, FEMA is working with our state partners to develop a GAP analysis of emergency management in anticipation of a catastrophic event. This analysis will provide the states and the federal government with an understanding of the potential resource requirements needed following a major disaster. FEMA will use this analysis to improve the federal government's ability to respond to and recover from a catastrophic event.

While we undertake this initiative on the state and federal level, I encourage all businesses to do the same so that you can identify your own gaps in your business continuity plans. Knowing our weaknesses and where our holes are before an event occurs is every bit as important as how we respond to the event itself.

Thank you for your feedback on the first issue of The Continuum. Please continue to send us your comments and suggestions so that we may focus this newsletter on topics that are important to you.

Enjoy!
