WINDSOR, Conn. -- The only way to register for Federal and State disaster assistance is by directly contacting the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  Individuals and businesses affected by the storms from April 15 - 27 need to know that contacting other agencies does not register them with FEMA.

"Our drive to have people call the 2-1-1 system was a big success," said Governor M. Jodi Rell.  "They provided us with a detailed listing of areas hit and damages incurred. Now, people with damages and losses need to carry this process one step further and also get in touch with FEMA.  Let them know that help is needed."

"Sometimes people think they have registered when they have not," said FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Mike Parker. "People may have called their county emergency manager or registered for assistance with the American Red Cross. Neither of those things gets them registered with FEMA. The only way to be considered for FEMA disaster programs is by applying on the phone, on the web, or at a Disaster Recovery Center."

The toll-free number is 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for speech- or hearing-impaired.  The teleregistration line is available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week.  The web address is www.fema.gov.

After individuals and business owners register, a visit to a Disaster Recovery Center can address their questions and concerns.  The centers are open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Applicants may visit any center set up in the declared counties.
