FEMA Teams to Begin Damage Assessments in Connecticut

Release Date: April 19, 2007
Release Number: R1-CT-01

Hartford, CT - Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Preliminary Damage Assessment (PDA) teams, working in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS), will set out Friday to summarize the impact of the nor'easter that took place throughout Connecticut and other Northeast states this week.

The ten teams, comprised of state, local and federal inspectors, will canvass Connecticut cities and towns where damage has been reported. The inspectors will gather data and prepare a damage summary for use by Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell, who will determine whether a request should be made to FEMA for federal assistance.

There are two types of PDA teams, one for Public Assistance and one for Individual Assistance. The Public Assistance teams review damage to public infrastructure and costs incurred by state and local governments, while the Individual Assistance teams review damage to individual homes and properties. In Connecticut, there will be five of each type of team.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
