FEMA Funds Nearly $52 Million To Kansas Electrical Cooperatives

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Kansas Emergency Management, a division of The Adjutant General's Department, today announced nearly $52 million in funding to help Kansas electrical cooperatives recover from severe winter storms earlier this year. The funding is being provided to nine cooperatives located across the state to restore damaged facilities.

“These funds are helping to restore critical infrastructure, ensuring the delivery of electricity to homes across Kansas,” said Dick Hainje, FEMA Region VII Director.
The funding is being provided under FEMA’s Public Assistance program. Local governments that qualify can be reimbursed for the cost of the repair or replacement of publicly owned facilities damaged by the event. FEMA reviews and approves the submittals and obligates the federal share of the costs, which cannot be less than 75 percent, to the state. Once FEMA obligates funds to the state, further management of the assistance, including disbursement to applicants is the responsibility of the State. FEMA will continue to monitor the recovery progress to ensure the timely delivery of eligible assistance and compliance with the law and regulations.
“The State and FEMA have a solid working relationship that has been productive for our residents. These funds are evidence of that,” said Maj. Gen Tod M. Bunting, Kansas Adjutant General and Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.
FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
