Springfield, MO -- Over the next 10 days, the six remaining Disaster Recovery Centers located in communities across Missouri will close their doors. (See attached closing schedule.)
Disaster Recovery Centers are temporary educational resource centers, coordinated by the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). In all, 11 Disaster Recovery Centers were opened throughout the state to assist survivors of the May tornadoes, severe storms and flooding.
"Our Disaster Recovery Centers were opened shortly after the May 4th disaster to help survivors learn about the various assistance programs available," said Mike Karl, federal coordinating officer for the Missouri recovery effort. "I hope people who have questions about assistance or the status of their application will visit a Disaster Recovery Center as soon as possible so as not to miss out on the opportunities and information there."
Visiting a Disaster Recovery Center is not required and assistance will still be only a toll-free phone call away. However, given the wide range of state and federal disaster assistance programs, many people find it helpful to visit Recovery Centers, which are free and open to the public, and provide an opportunity for disaster survivors to:
- Meet face-to-face with trained disaster assistance specialists
- Inquire about an application for disaster assistance
- Get help filling out an SBA disaster loan application
- Find out how an insurance settlement affects a pending application
- Have disaster-related correspondence and paperwork explained
- Provide copies of any additional documentation required by the disaster programs (proof of occupancy, insurance settlement documents, etc.)
- Offer ideas for low-cost methods to reduce future disaster damages.
Recovery officials encourage those affected by the May tornadoes, severe storms and flooding to first register for disaster assistance by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Persons who are hearing- or speech-impaired can apply by calling a TTY number: 1-800-462-7565. Multilingual operators also are available when needed. The application deadline is July 7, 2003.
The Disaster Recovery Centers will be staffed from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, at the following locations until the closing dates listed below.
