» More Information on Missouri Severe Storms, Tornadoes and Flooding
Springfield, MO -- More than $3.6 million in federal disaster assistance has been approved for Missourians affected by the tornadoes, severe storms and flooding that began May 4, disaster officials announced today.
"Recovering from a major disaster is never easy," said Mike Karl, federal coordinating officer for the recovery effort. "But we're pleased that so many Missourians are using the federal, state and local resources available to them. Our assistance programs are designed to help people as they begin the challenge of rebuilding their homes and lives."
On May 6, President Bush declared a major disaster for 39 Missouri counties, opening the way for federal disaster assistance for people and businesses devastated by the tornadoes, severe storms and flooding that began on May 4. Eleven counties were added to the disaster declaration on May 9 and 18 more on May 16, making a total of 68 counties statewide eligible for disaster assistance.
Jerry Uhlmann, state coordinating officer, said his staff is working closely with their partners at the federal and local levels. "If there's any good news amid all the devastation, it's that we're working together to get our people and communities back on their feet," Uhlmann said.
