LINCOLN, NE -- The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency has a wonderful website specifically designed to help youngsters both before and after disasters. The website address is www.fema.gov/kids.

FEMA for Kids offers a wide variety of options for kids can learn about tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, tsunamis and earthquakes by reading stories, playing games or using the interactive coloring book. Look at some examples of things on the FEMA for Kids website:

Help your family put a together a Disaster Supply Kit. Click on the icon which will let you view all objects in the kit and make your own list of the types of items your family will need.

Also look for the interactive coloring book, which allows you to color the pages on your computer or download separate pages or the entire coloring book. There is a great story about Julia and Robbie--The Disaster Twins that older children will enjoy. Check out the Games and Quizzes section and look for the special place where you can order coloring books, storybooks and brochures from FEMA. There is a special page geared just for Little Ones with games, stories and other activities.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
