DES MOINES, Iowa -- Individuals who suffered damages from the severe storm, flooding, and tornadoes may be eligible for disaster assistance from the State of Iowa and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) even if they are insured.

“If you are uninsured or under-insured for disaster-related expenses, damages or losses, FEMA may be able to help,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Thomas J. Costello. “If your losses are not fully covered, take the first step and call FEMA’s toll free number 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) to register for assistance.”

TTY service is available at 1-800-462-7585 for individuals who are speech and hearing impaired. Phone lines are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT, seven days a week until further notice.

“It is important that impacted Iowans receive all the disaster assistance available to them,” stated Steve Zimmerman, State Coordinating Officer.

The disaster programs available include grants to help pay for temporary housing, home repairs, other serious disaster-related needs, and low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for homeowners, renters or business owners.

The Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division was known as the Iowa Emergency Management Division until July 2003. The current name reflects the dual nature of the Division to provide programs and resources for both homeland security and emergency management efforts.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
