No. 109-02 June 07, 2002
June 10 and 11 Events to Mark Completion of Facade and Dedication Ceremony

Tuesday, June 11 will mark nine months since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks against the Pentagon. Several events have been planned for Monday, June 10 and Tuesday, June 11, to observe this anniversary.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz will place a dedication capsule behind the final piece of new limestone completing the Pentagon's western faade damaged by the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. This capsule is not meant to be unearthed. It is a symbolic dedication to those who have sacrificed and those who serve. This dedication will take place on the construction side on the western side of the Pentagon on Tuesday, June 11 at 10 a.m. EDT. This will be the final slab of almost 4,000 used to reconstruct the outer wall of the Pentagon.

Later the same day Pentagon Renovation program manager Walker Lee Evey will hold a press conference to discuss the progress of reconstruction at the Pentagon with three months remaining until the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attack. The briefing will take place at 1 p.m. EDT in the DoD Briefing Room, Pentagon 2E781. Also during this briefing a representative of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will detail the design efforts for the proposed Pentagon public memorial.

Prior to these two events, there will be a media photo opportunity on Monday, June 10 from 1 to 1:30 p.m. EDT in the DoD Briefing Room, Pentagon 2E781. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Force Management Policy Charles S. Abell will display the items which will be placed in the capsule. Television and photographers will be able to take pictures of the capsule and the items at that time.

Media not possessing Pentagon press building pass who wish to cover one or any of these events should call (703) 697-5131 for access to the ceremony and or press briefing.
