UnSecDef Edwin Dorn will be guest speaker for the Joint Center and Economic Studies.

Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, Edwin Dorn, will be the guest speaker at a luncheon hosted by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies on Monday, May 6, 1996 at 12 p.m., at The Carlton Hotel, Mount Vernon Room, 16th and K Street, NW, Washington, D.C. Mr. Dorn's presentation, Minorities and the Military: A Broader Perspective, will discuss the challenges of designing a national security doctrine for the post Cold War era.

The luncheon kicks off a half-day forum on The Status of the Minority In A Changing Military. Two afternoon sessions are also planned. Col. William T. Bowers (Ret.) co-author of the forthcoming book, Black Soldier, White Army, will address the effects of the evolving racial climate on the 24th Regiment during the Korean War and the relevance of this legacy for today's troops. The declining propensity of black males to enlist in the U.S. Army will be the focus of the second session, led by military historian Alan L. Gropman.

The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies is a national nonprofit institution that conducts research on public issues of special concern to African-Americans and promotes informed and effective involvement of blacks in the governmental process.
