    AWIPS Local Applications development Workshop

    Course Number: M-20-01

    Audience: Those needing the knowledge required to develop local applications on AWIPS.
    NOTE: For the Feb. 2008 workshop it is suggested that the attendees be those with some 
    current AWIPS development experience or at least some programming experience, as new ADE 
    tools will be introduced.
    
    Objectives: To provide developers the information and tools necessary to design, 
    build, and test local applications on AWIPS. Focus will be on AWIPS-specific data access,
    programming tools (SQL, XML, JavaScript, Java) and related information to enable 
    development and porting of local applications to AWIPS.
    
    - Define the AWIPS development environment and best practices
    - Provide information and tools to enable a developer to write or port local applications
       on AWIPS
    - Provide hands-on experience in developing and implementing local applications in 
       Scripting and programming languages

    Prerequisites: 
                         1. Basic Unix Skills - Self learned, NWSTC/University/Private

    Audience: AWIPS Focal Point, Science Operations Officer, Development and
    Operations Hydrologist, and Information Technology Officer.  National Centers 
    that do not have an AFP, SOO, DOH or ITO may send personnel that perform these 
    functions.
    
    Objectives: This course is intended to provide a working knowledge of
    AWIPS architecture, software and troubleshooting techniques in support 
    of the site System Administrator.

                   *  At least 6 months of Operational AWIPS support experience such
                      as software installation, script writing, development of local
                      applications, or troubleshooting D2D, data ingest, or networking
                      problems. Attendees should be familiar with basic AWIPS
                      functionality, such as D2D, procedures for installing software
                      and procedures for problem reporting. 
    
    Materials:        All course materials are provided.

    AWIPS Systems Manager (pictures)

    Objectives: The AWIPS System Manager's course is intended to provide the site ESA (or RFC equivalent), ITO and personnel responsible for performing system administration (National Center and Headquarter support personnel) with a deeper understanding of AWIPS hardware, communications, software componets and dataflow than what was gained in prior AWIPS C.U.T. training. The emphasis will be on learning monitoring and problem- solving techniques in order to ensure a secure and stable operating environment.

    Many troubleshooting exercises will be included with the following topics:

    Prerequisites: 1. DataComms: either -  DataComms CBTs/WBTs (DC-BAS-1, DC-TRM-1, DC-TEL-1,
                                            DC-PRO-1, DC-MOD-1, DC_CIR-1, DC-NTW-1, DC-ETN-2,
                                            DC-TCP-2, DC-TIS-2, DC-FDI-2, DC-FRR-2)
                                     or - Former NWSTC DataComms II course
                                     or - Equiv. knowledge of LANs, dedicated and dial circuits
    
                   2. Any NWSTC UNIX/LINUX S.A. course
    
                   3. Completion of the NWSTC on-line course Postgres Overview for ESAs, ITOs, and AWIPS Focal Points. 
    
                   4. At least 6 months of AWIPS ESA experience including software
                      /hardware installation, user administration, basic system
                      monitoring (appendix I of the System Managers Manual), and
                      troubleshooting and problem resolution of software/hardware
                      /networking problems in conjunction with NCF. 
    
    
    Materials: A copy of the AWIPS System Managers manual will be provided.
    This manual will be referenced throughout the training course.
    A student guide and all other materials will also be provided by NWSTC.
