The following chronology touches on events significant to the Massachusetts Fifty-fourth Regiment and the Shaw Memorial.Recruitment began in February 1863 and Robert Gould Shaw was later selected to lead the new regiment. The Massachusetts Fifty-fourth sailed to Hilton Head, South Carolina, in June 1863 in preparation for an assault on Fort Wagner.
