This article briefly explores Avery's arrival at the Rockefeller Institute, and how he helped transform the rather narrow focus of its research in primarily infectious diseases to a broader approach that integrated chemistry with biology and medicine. The portion of the article that focuses on Avery's work with the "transforming principle" is largely drawn from Rene Dubos' biography of Avery, "The Professor, the Institute, and DNA."
