Deadline Nears for Applying for Disaster Assistance

Phoenix, AZ -- Eligible disaster victims in designated jurisdictions in Arizona who need help and have not yet applied for federal and state disaster assistance must do so by Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, the last day to file applications for most disaster assistance programs, according to federal and state disaster recovery officials.
Federal Coordinating Officer David Fukutomi and State Coordinating Officer Michael P. Austin urge those who have not done so to apply as soon as possible by calling the toll-free registration line, 1-800-462-9029, Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hearing or speech impaired persons may call the TTY line at 1-800-462-7585.
Disaster victims of the severe storms and flooding of Oct. 21 to Nov. 8 in La Paz, Maricopa, Pinal or Yavapai counties or the Gila River Indian Community may be eligible for disaster aid. Assistance could be provided to renters, homeowners or business owners who live or do business in areas designated eligible for assistance as a consequence of the Oct. 27 disaster declaration by President Bill Clinton. In order to receive assistance, disaster victims must first apply.
Applicants may qualify for assistance under several federal and state programs providing grants for disaster housing assistance, grants to meet disaster-related expenses, or disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Loan applications must be completed and returned to SBA by Jan. 5, 2001. Businesses applying for SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans have until Jul. 27, 2001 to submit applications.
