Introduction: Potential Health Hazards Associated with the Use of Cellular
Telephones
Hand-held cellular
telephones have been used in the United States since 1984. By early 2001,
the number of cell-phone users in the United States had exploded to more
than 100 million, and to more than 500 million worldwide. Concerns about
adverse health effects associated with cell-phone use have been raised,
particularly their role in motor vehicle crashes and the incidence of
certain cancers (see, for example, the note below about cell phone
shields). This Science Olympiad Problem involves investigations performed
by Disease Detectives to determine whether these associations were real. |
