April 22, 2009 - This year’s Earth Day, my first as Chairman of FERC, reminds me to rededicate myself and this agency to do what we can to provide clean, reliable electricity for consumers around the country.

As Chairman of FERC, I am committed to making clean energy a fundamental component of the electricity that consumers rely on every day. Nationwide, less than 7 percent of our electricity generation comes from renewable resources. And we are not making the best and wisest use of our greatest energy resource: Demand-side resources, which harness the ability of consumers to use electricity more efficiently. Our electricity service has been predicated on supply, with limited focus on improving the efficiency with which it is used or on enabling customers to do their part by participating in electric markets on par with generation.

To improve our performance in these areas requires us to upgrade our transmission system and refine our operation of the electricity grid to accommodate the particular characteristics of these resources. Investing in and operating "smart" technologies will be an important part of this.

Achieving clean electricity will not be easy, but is something the citizens of this country – and around the world – deserve. This is my pledge, Earth Day, 2009.

February 19, 2009 - “Concerns about global warming and our continued dependence on foreign oil make it clear: We must accelerate the integration of clean, reliable, domestic energy sources into our country’s energy portfolio and unlock the potential of our country’s location-constrained renewable energy resources, such as wind power. To help make that happen, we have adopted a more flexible approach to our transmission rates policy that will help merchant transmission developers – those that take on all the risk of their investments – overcome their financing challenges. We did that in orders approving rates for two projects that will deliver wind-generated electricity from Montana and Wyoming to consumers in Nevada and other Southwestern states. Consumers will benefit from this evolution of Commission policy because it will promote the expansion of our transmission grid’s capacity and thereby enhance the development of our country’s clean renewable energy potential.”

January 23, 2009 - “I thank President Obama for the opportunity to lead FERC at a time when our nation faces the challenge of providing consumers with access to clean, renewable energy and ensuring that our nation can deliver that energy in the most efficient, smart and technologically sophisticated manner possible. I look forward to working with my FERC colleagues, FERC staff, the public and the energy industry to turn these energy challenges into a reality.”
