FEMA's Disaster Recovery Centers and Telephone Registration Hours Changed

San Juan, P.R. -- Commonwealth and Federal disaster recovery officials announced that new hours of operations will be in effect on Monday, December15, 2003 for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs). The new schedule for the DRCs will be Monday through Saturday, from 9:00 a. m. to 6:00 p.m. The centers will not open on Sundays.

Any individual, family or business owner who suffered damages due to the rains, floods and landslides, which occurred during November 10-23, 2003 can visit any of the recovery centers for information on Commonwealth and federal assistance. In addition, experts on hazard mitigation will be at the DRCs to provide information on how to safeguard buildings against future floods.

To date, a total of 33,537 individuals have applied for disaster assistance and $30,322,554 million in FEMA emergency assistance has been approved to affected individuals. The DRCs are located in:

Canóvanas: Cultural Center, City Hall, Luis Hernais St.
Fajardo: Municipal Assembly Room, 2nd Floor, Munoz Rivera St. corner of Dr. Lopez St.
Guánica: Club Puertorriqueño, Road #3116, Ensenada
Juana Diaz: Luis Muñoz Marin Sport Complex, Victor Marzo Santiago Munic. Court, Rd. 510, Int. Rd. 14
Lajas: José “Joe” Basora Street, 65th Inf. Rio Lajas [Front of Farmacia Caldas Rest.]

Additionally, the schedule for FEMA’s toll-free registration number, 1-800-621-3362 (TTY: 1-800-462-7585 for hearing or speech impaired individuals) will change. Effective Monday, December15, 2003 the new hours will be Monday to Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
