The Future of NOAA's Monitoring
We continued to regularly monitor a range of study sites in Prince William Sound through the year 2000. In 2001, we began a smaller-scale, experimental phase of our research, focusing our work on fewer sites in order to better understand the ecological recovery process from an oil spill of this type. We and others will use this information to improve oil spill response and cleanup in the future, with an overall goal of minimizing environmental harm. Because of this, the Exxon Valdez will have left at least one positive legacy in its tragic wake: knowledge that will benefit all of us and the environment the next time disaster strikes.
