WASHINGTON, Oct. 30, 1998 – Assistant Chief of Police Mary J. Wamsley of Commerce City, Colo., has been named the 1999 chair of the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services.
Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen appointed Wamsley to the one-year term, which starts Jan. 1. She is also current president of the board of trustees of the International Association of Women Police, and co-founder and president of the Colorado Association of Women Police. Wamsley has served on the Forces Development and Utilization Subcommittee since joining DACOWITS in 1997. She has been subcommittee vice chair since January 1998. Defense Secretary George C. Marshall created DACOWITS in 1951 to help DoD recruit and retain service women. The committee also advises the secretary of defense on policies relating to the effective use of women in the services. Members serve three-year terms without compensation and include prominent civilian women and men representing academia, industry, public service and other professions.
