WASHINGTON, Feb. 1, 2006 – U.S. soldiers destroyed an improvised explosive device attached to railroad tracks about 20 miles south of Baghdad Jan. 30. Elsewhere, Iraqi and U.S. soldiers yesterday discovered a large weapons cache stashed in a remote desert area, officials said.
Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers discovered the improvised explosive device on railroad tracks near Mahmudiyah. An explosive ordnance disposal team detonated the device without injuries or damage to structures. The IED was made of a 152 mm and a 122 mm artillery round attached to a motorcycle battery, two washing machine timers, detonation cord, and electric blasting caps, soldiers from 16th Engineer Brigade said. In another incident, terrorists hit a house south of Mahmudiyah with a 122 mm round, causing seven Iraqi casualties and extensive damage to the house yesterday. Elsewhere yesterday, Iraqi security forces and coalition forces found a weapons cache in a remote area of the desert south of Najaf, about 103 miles south of Baghdad on the western bank of the Euphrates River. Explosive ordnance disposal teams from the Iraqi security forces and the U.S. Army's 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, recovered 60 122 mm rockets and four unidentified missiles.
