WASHINGTON, Aug. 15, 2001 – U.S. Air Force F-16 jets attacked an Iraqi missile site Aug. 14, said a DoD official.
The raid "struck a surface-to-air missile site near An Nasiriyah ... about 175 miles southeast of Baghdad," Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. Craig Quigley said to reporters Aug. 14. The attack occurred at about 8:15 a.m. Eastern time, Quigley said, adding that the British said their planes didn't take part in the raid. He remarked that a target damage assessment was under way. Quigley called the target "another element in the Iraqi integrated air defense system that had been very active" in threatening coalition aircrews. "We reserve the right to strike back and to minimize the risk to coalition aircrews," he added. Some 20 U.S. and British aircraft hit several Iraqi radar and surface-to-air missile sites Aug. 10. Pentagon target damage assessments from those attacks are in. "We are very pleased with the results," Quigley said.
